annrenee: Bio

annrenee

Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember; I learned to sing harmony drying dishes at my mother’s elbow in our Michigan kitchen, and I got my first guitar, a $40 hand-me-down Harmony garage sale special, when I turned 12. I spent the better part of the next 6 years behind closed doors, teaching myself every James Taylor and Carole King song I could find, when I wasn’t singing in high school musical groups. When I graduated from college, I raced down to my local music store and plunked down my entire first paycheck on a 12 string Guild guitar that I still play today.

After a lengthy hiatus from performing (distracted by babies, husbands, jobs, and various other forms of drama), I resumed music in earnest about 12 years ago, now with a 6 string Gibson guitar as my alter ego. My tastes haven’t changed much; in addition to my high school heroes, I count Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kim Richey, the Indigo Girls, and Jackson Browne among my influences. Music as therapy drove me to songwriting just short of 6 years ago (it’s a lot cheaper); I continue to work out life’s conflicts big and small there, and hope that my songs can somehow help others do the same.
